CST Trustee elected to lead the National Council of Churches
Jim E. Winkler, a member of the CST Trustees, began serving as president and general secretary of the National Council of Churches of Christ on January 1, 2014. The NCC is comprised of 37 Protestant, Orthodox, Evangelical and historically African American denominations and focuses on theological dialogue, interreligious relations, ecumenical faith formation, and issues of justice and peace. Kathryn Lohre, Past Chair of NCC said, “We are confident that Jim Winkler’s gifts and experience are just what the Council needs to stay on the right path and expand its horizons.”
Previously Jim served as general secretary of the United Methodist General Board of Church & Society. Over the years, Jim has participated in peace delegations to Vietnam, Iraq, Iran, Israel, and Palestine. Jim has chaired Faith United Against Tobacco and Faiths United Against Gun Violence and has also served on the board of Bread for the World.
