OUT!LOUD! premieres Sept. 4, 7pm
All are invited to the Claremont Premiere of OUT! LOUD!
Wednesday, Sept. 4, 7 p.m.
Prof. Betty Bernhard of Pomona College presents her new documentary Out! Loud!, which explores how members of a LGBT theatre group in Pune, India devise a play enacting the challenges they faced as children and now as adults. The cast re-enacts their personal struggles and how they manage to accommodate the societal restrictions they face. Parallel stories from certain ancient texts help to tear down the idea that LGBT activity is a modern "Western" idea. It has always been present.
Out! Loud! was screened at the 6th Annual Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala in May and the Reel Dreams Queer Film Festival in Chennai in June.
The 48 minute film consists of personal interviews, rehearsals, and performance with an audience. The free screening will be followed by conversation with Prof. Bernhard and the respondents, Prof. Nita Kumar, Brown Family Chair of South Asian Studies at Claremont McKenna College, and Prof. Duane Bidwell, Associate Professor of Practical Theology, Spiritual Care and Counseling, Claremont School of Theology.
Members of CST’s Center for Sexuality, Gender, and Religion, which co-sponsored the video, the Center for Jain Studies, and the Center for Sikh Studies will also join the conversation, which will be followed by an informal reception.
There is no charge and all are invited.
