The Episcopal Theological School at Claremont, located on the campus of Claremont School of Theology, began in 1958 as the Southern California extension of the Church Divinity School of the Pacific. In 1962, the Right Reverend F. Eric Bloy established it as an institution of the Diocese of Los Angeles. Today, the Episcopal Theological School at Claremont (ETSC) serves as a resource of theological education for Episcopalians and members of other Christian communions in the Southwest.
It is an independent, state-chartered theological school offering weekend, evening, and occasional daytime educational opportunities to qualified students, including those seeking ordination, members of the clergy, and serious lay inquirers. In its twice-monthly weekend program, ETSC offers classes in the four main subject areas of the theological curriculum Bible, Church History, Theology, and Practical Studies. These Friday-Saturday sessions make it possible for a student engaged in full-time employment to earn academic credit toward either the M.Div. or the M.A. in Religion at Claremont School of Theology. Degree students at the School may elect courses at ETSC with the approval of the Academic Dean.
The ETSC faculty are adjunct faculty at Claremont and the curriculum is coordinated with Claremont requirements. The School enjoys the use of the unique facilities of its host campus, including the Library, Chapel, classrooms and cafeteria. In return, it seeks to bring the community the spiritual and intellectual resources of the Anglican tradition.
