HB317 Visionaries and Mystics in Jewish Literature

A survey of texts and movements in Jewish mysticism including the visions of the Prophets, Rabbinic Heilkhalot texts, Medieval Kabbalah, and modern Hasidism.

3 Semester Units, 3 Advanced Course of Study Units.

Dr. Sweeney is Professor of Hebrew Bible at Claremont School of Theology and Professor of Religion at Claremont Graduate University.

 

IS 405 D.Min Project Colloquium

Lincoln Galloway, 8:30-11:30 a.m., Monday-Friday, Craig 111

Students will do a project proposal and study the academic and technical expectations for the

D.Min. project.  Students must be prepared to commit an extensive period of time in independent study.  This colloquium may be elected by Ph.D. candidates in regard to dissertation writing.

Dr. Galloway is Assistant Professor of Homiletics at Claremont School of Theology.

TH393 Introduction to Process Theology

Marjorie Hewitt Suchocki, 9:00-12:00 Monday-Friday

An Introductory exploration Alfred North Whitehead’s relational model for interpreting and applying Christianity to the issues of life and faith.  Issues such as the nature and power of God, incarnation, community, and eschatology will be considered.

1 Semester Unit.

Dr. Suchocki is Ingraham Professor of Theology, Emerita at Claremont School of Theology.

 

 

TH394 Creatively Transforming the Church: A Practical Application of Process Theology to Church Life

Robert Brizee ,Adrienne Brizee, Rick Marshall and Paul Lance,  9:00-12:00 Monday-Friday

Practical study of the ways process modes of thinking can rejuvenate congregations.  Attention is particularly given to worship, education, and pastoral care.

1 Semester Unit.

 

Robert Brizee is an ordained United Methodist minister (retired) and is co-founder of the Lay School of Theology of the First United Methodist Church, Wenatchee, Washington.

 

Adrienne Brizee is a licensed mental health counselor and is co-founder of the Lay School of Theology of the First United Methodist Church , Wenatchee, Washington.

 

Rick Marshall is pastor of Brea Congregational Church, UCC in Brea, California.

 

Paul Lance is pastor of Seaside Community Church, UCC in Torrance, California.

 

 

TH395 Biblical Understanding and Process Theology

Ronald L. Farmer, 9:00-12:00 Monday-Friday

Process and the Bible. An application of the process theme of “creative transformation” to the understanding and application of biblical texts.  Study will focus on New Testament texts.

1 Semester Unit.

Dr. Farmer is the Irvin C. and Edy Chapman Dean of the Wallace All Faiths Chapel Choir and Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Chapman University.

 

TH396 Advanced Process Seminar: The Problem of Evil

John B. Cobb, Jr., 9:00-12:00, Monday-Friday

A consideration of the different ways in which process philosophers and theologians have dealt with the problem of evil.  Some previous study of process thinking is required as a basis for taking this course.

1 Semester Unit.

Dr.  Cobb is Ingraham Professor of Theology, Emeritus at Claremont School of Theology.

2:00-4:00: Film of the day

4:00-5:00: Integration of film and morning class

5:00-5:30: Vesper Service

 

The morning classes may be taken for 1 semester unit of academic credit through the Claremont School of Theology at the tuition rate of $410.  Lunch and the afternoon sessions are optional for an additional $100 payable to Process and Faith.  No Auditors will be allowed to enroll for these courses.  Registered students should contact the Process and Faith Center for classroom information.

Investigates stories of Jesus’ death in the four Gospels, beginning with Mark, and then Matthew, Luke and John.

IS303 Spiritual Practices for the Active Life

Karen Dalton, 9:00-12:00, 1:30-4:30 Monday-Friday

In the midst of busy lives, how can we find peace and focus?  How can we open ourselves to experiencing God’s presence in our day-to-day world?  Today there is a new interest in “practicing our faith” as a response to these kinds of questions.  This course will explore traditional and contemporary spiritual practices.  We will reflect on our own personal patterns and experience new possibilities for spiritual practice.  Distinctively Methodist spirituality will be emphasized, including both individual and community-oriented practices.

Admission to Claremont School of Theology

All students wishing to enroll in a Summer 2005 course for academic credit who have not previously enrolled at Claremont School of Theology and students who are registering for Advanced Course of Study credit must complete a Non-degree Application for Admission. 

 

Please note that students interested in applying for Advanced Course of Study credit will be required to provide proof of completion of a Bachelor of Arts degree.

 

Students who have been admitted to Claremont School of Theology for the Fall 2005 semester may register for the Summer 2005 without completing a Non-degree application.

There is a $50 application fee for Non-Degree students enrolling for the first time at Claremont School of Theology. 

 

 

Tuition and Fees:

M.A., M.Div., D.Min., Non-Degree students: $410 per unit

Continuing Education Units:                                             $65 per CEU

Advanced Course of Study:                                              $100 per unit

Audit:                                                                                     $100 per unit

 

Full payment of tuition is due by the first day of class.  Fees may be paid by cash, check or credit card (Visa and Mastercard).

 

Claremont School of Theology retains a security interest in all transcripts, diplomas, certificates, letters of recommendation, or grade reports, which shall not be released until all outstanding balances are paid in full.  In the event the School deems it necessary to employ a collection agent or attorney to enforce payment, the registrant agrees to pay all reasonable collection costs and attorney’s fees.  No future registrations will be allowed until all charges are paid in full.

 

 

 

 

 

Refund Schedule for Dropping Courses:

100% Refund        After the first class meeting less $50 deposit

75% Refund          After the second class meeting less $50 deposit

50% Refund          At the end of the first week less $50 deposit

No Refund             After the first week of class

 

 

Housing

United Methodist Course of Study

 

In cooperation with the Division of Ordained Ministry of the United Methodist Church, Claremont School of Theology offers the Course of Study for certified candidates for ministry in the United Methodist Church who are unable to earn the standard Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree. Included in the Course of Study are the following programs:

 

1.                    Studies for the license as a local pastor (formerly license to preach)

2.                    Five year course of study leading to eligibility for associate membership in a United Methodist Annual Conference.  Classes are offered in English and Spanish.

 

These classes are not available for academic credit, CEU’s or Audit.  Enrollment is generally restricted to United Methodist Candidates for ministry.
