What's Working in Community Connections?

"How can we strengthen a congregation's ministry in and with its surrounding community?"

This question was explored in a recent day-long workshop at Claremont School of Theology entitled, "What's Working in Community Connections?" The event was recorded in four parts, and the School is now sharing the videos for use in your congregations. Participants include:

  • Helene Slessarev-Jamir, the Mildred Hutchinson Professor of Urban Ministry at Claremont School of Theology
  • Michael Mata, national director of "Tools for Transformation" at World Vision International
  • David Devereaux, district superintendent in the Desert-Southwest Conference of The United Methodist Church.




Part 1: Successful Models of Community Ministry

In this panel discussion, participants describe five successful examples of comunity ministry in Southern California and Arizona



Part 2: Reading and Working with your Congregation's Culture
Rev. David Devereaux is a United Methodist pastor in the Las Vegas area and district superintendent in the Desert-Southwest Conference. With passion for and experience with revitalizing congregations, he speaks about how to prepare a congregation to engage in new ministries.



Part 3: Reading your Community

Rev. Michael Mata is national director of the "Tools for Transformation" program at World Vision International and an adjunct faculty member at Claremont School of Theology. He speaks about how to "read" a community, including clues about who lives and works in an area and why.



Part 4: Social Analysis and the Pastoral Circle
Dr. Helene Slessarev-Jamir, professor of urban ministry at Claremont School of Theology, speaks about the how churches can respond to community needs in creative and vital ways.
