Music and Meditations
Special worship service to focus on faith and the arts
Thursday, April 2, 2009
10:30 a.m. in Mudd Theater
Claremont School of Theology
What happens when we slow down the pace of life? What do
we hear when we are quiet enough to be still? Answers to the questions
can be found at "Music and Meditations," a unique worship service open
to the public and featuring Music Serving the Word Ministries,
a national effort to fuse the arts and faith.
This unique service offers an opportunity to explore issues
of faith, beauty, reflection, and renewal within the context of the arts.
Music Serving the Word Ministries brings new artists together
for this worship service, offering a unique presentation for both students
and the public. The service's artistic "Music and Meditations" theme offers
amazing soundscapes and textures using keyboards, acoustic bass, and drums
designed to nourish the soul with prayerful reflection.
"Music and Meditations" immerses participants in a deeply
moving and artistic experience. Through spoken word, improvisational music
breaking traditional labels of "jazz" and "classical," and multimedia
experiences, the service offers a unique encounter with Holy Scripture
and provides a connection between music and the arts and deeper matters
of the soul.
"Our lives too often resemble a barren landscape," says
Rev. Richard Parrish of Music Serving the Word Ministries. "This
service is about bringing beauty, reflection, and renewal back into our
lives. Through music and meditations, we are able to reconnect to matters
of the soul, enriching ourselves in the process."
According to Rev. Parrish, this service promises to encourage
and inspire, leaving individuals feeling refreshed and renewed. Music
Serving the Word has a passion to explore how music and art can "serve
the Word," and, in the process, the greater community.
Holding services at institutions such as Claremont School
of Theology brings the arts into sacred spaces, enabling the community
to experience a "musical meditation" that leads the listener toward reflection
and personal application of Scripture through a soundscape of contemplative
worship.
Bob Ravenscroft's keyboards, Dwight Kilian's upright bass,
and Shaun Lowecki's drums offer an improvisational musical backdrop for
the spoken word of Rev. Richard Parrish. Mario Barnabe's visual images
complete the artistic experience by complementing the musical themes and
bringing focus and clarity to selected Scriptures.
