JERRY D. CAMPBELL NAMED PRESIDENT OF
CLAREMONT SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY
CLAREMONT, Calif.-March 23, 2006-Claremont School of Theology's Board
of Trustees this week announced the appointment of Dr. Jerry D. Campbell
as the institution's sixth president, effective June 1, 2006. Campbell
currently is chief information officer and university librarian at University
of Southern California, where he leads the university's planning and delivery
of services related to library resources and technology infrastructure.
"Dr. Campbell offers decades of experience in administering complex, forward-thinking
educational institutions," said Doug Dunipace, chair of the board
of trustees. "He brings expectations of excellence as the School works
on the frontiers of theological education."
"Claremont School of Theology has a national reputation as a premier
theological school," Campbell said, upon accepting the appointment. "I
look forward to learning more about the needs, capabilities and potential
of this remarkable institution."
Campbell is an ordained elder in the North Carolina Conference of The
United Methodist Church and is currently a member at Pasadena First United
Methodist Church, in Pasadena Calif.
In his present role at University of Southern California, Campbell administers
the Information Services Division, which includes the university libraries
and departments of academic computing and telecommunication services.
His duties include oversight of areas as broad as fiscal and personnel
issues, relations with faculty, technology strategy, and fundraising.
Before joining USC in 1996, Campbell served for ten years as vice-provost
for library affairs and professor of the practice of theological bibliography
at Duke University. He previously served as the library director at Perkins
School of Theology at Southern Methodist University and The Iliff School
of Theology in Denver, Colo.
Active nationally in higher education, Campbell has served on accreditation
review teams for the Association of Theological Schools, as well as review
visits to New York University, Boston University and Howard University,
among others. He also serves on the accrediting commission of the Senior
Colleges and Universities division of the Western Association of Schools
and Colleges (WASC).
Campbell has published nearly 40 articles and book chapters and has given
over 70 invited addresses on educational, administrative and theological
topics. He has served as president of the American Theological Library
Association and the Association of Research Libraries, and he serves currently
on the board of EDUCAUSE, a national non-profit organization focusing
on educational technology.
Campbell earned the Ph.D. in American History from University of Denver
in 1982 with an emphasis in Methodist studies. His dissertation is entitled
"Biblical Criticism in America 1858-1929: The Emergence of the Historical
Critic." He graduated summa cum laude with the M.Div. from Duke
Divinity School in 1971, and the M.S. in Library Science from University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1972. He graduated cum laude
with the B.A. from McMurry College (Abilene, Tex.) in 1968.
Campbell and his wife, LaVeta Campbell, plan to move to Claremont this
spring. They have one adult daughter.
Campbell will succeed Philip A. Amerson, the current president at Claremont
School of Theology. Amerson served for nearly six years before accepting
the presidency of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston,
Ill.
