CGU DOCTORAL TRANSFER INFORMATION
As you may know,
Claremont School of Theology is transitioning into a small inter-religious university to extend and enrich Claremont’s already stellar reputation for religious and theological scholarship. (You can read more about the "University Project" here.)
As part of this process, Claremont received approval by both of its accrediting agencies to offer the Ph.D. in Religion beginning in Fall 2009, in the fields of
- Hebrew Bible (HB)
- New Testament (NT)
- Process Studies (PS)
- Religion, Ethics and Society (RES, formerly TEC).
Admission to the programs will likewise be suspended at CGU in Fall 2010. The purpose and design of the degrees essentially will be the same as those now at CGU and will be taught and advised by the same faculty.
Beginning immediately, students in the corresponding doctoral programs at CGU have the option of transferring into the new programs at CST for a limited time. Please contact the Office of Admission for details.
This page offers the most current and accurate information to date about the transfer process. For more information about any aspect of this process, contact the Office of Admission, located on the first floor of the Colwell Building, at (909) 447-2507 or admission@cst.edu.
- Matriculation: CST will recruit and enroll the first full entering class in these programs in Fall 2010 (as stated above, CGU will suspend admission to these programs). However, as a current or in-coming CGU student, you have the option of transferring into the CST program for a limited time. Please note that you are not required to transfer to CST; you can complete your degree in its entirety at CGU.
- Time Frame: If you are considering a transfer to CST, you may do so at any time through the end of the Fall 2010 semester. After that time, you may only transfer to CST if you have completed no more than 75 percent (54 units) of coursework toward the CGU degree.
- Transfer of Units: All of your coursework (including previously transferred units to CGU) will transfer to CST. You will not lose any units if you choose this option.
- Tuition: CST tuition for 2009-2010 is $20,760 per year for full time enrollment ($865 per unit, not including fees).
- Financial Aid: If you choose to transfer to CST, you will be offered the same scholarship percentage that you receive at CGU (subject to verification by your financial aid award letter from CGU dated before July 1, 2009). For example, if you receive a 30 percent tuition scholarship from CGU, you will also receive the monetary equivalent of a 30 percent tuition scholarship at CST. You also will be required to add CST to your current FAFSA record for 2009-10 (school code: G01288).
- Transfer Process: Normally, Ph.D. students at CST are required to complete a lengthy application, including five letters of recommendation. To ease this one-time transfer process for CGU students, CST has streamlined the procedure that gathers all the official documents legally required for admission. This includes
- Completion of the CGU Transfer Application Form.
- All official test scores (when possible) sent directly to CST
- All original transcripts for schools attended beyond high school, inlcuding CGU
- One letter of reference, from your current academic advisor
- Continuous Registration: Students who have completed coursework and are studying for or taking exams, or writing the dissertation, can also transfer to CST. Tuition for continuous registration is the equivalent of one unit of Ph.D. coursework ($865 at CST). Please note that if you have finished coursework, you will not be offered financial aid for continuous registration or other fees. Students in the Ph.D. program at CST have seven years to complete the degree. If you transfer, your “degree clock” will transfer with you; you will not gain additional time to complete your degree as a result of the transfer.
- Student Services: With the exception of full library access at CGU, all student services – including email service, writing support, and health insurance – are self-contained at CST. As a CST student, you will no longer have access to the Claremont Colleges health services. You will be required to demonstrate proof of health insurance or join the student health plan (provided by Kaiser Permanente).
- Housing: If you choose to transfer, you will have the option of applying for CST housing. Students at CST pay a slightly reduced rate for housing in all CST apartments. (If you already live in CST housing, you will qualify for the reduced rate.)
- International Students: If you are an international student, CST will help arrange for the transfer of your visa status. Contact Leslie Rusch, international student advisor, at lrusch@cst.edu, or (909) 447-2503 for more information.
