The Urban Leadership Institute provides a "bridge" between the Claremont School of Theology and people actively engaged in the practice of urban ministry through a variety of programs and activities.
Extremely pragmatic workshops, courses, and seminars provide hands-on training in traditional and new techniques, theory, and practice to clergy and lay leaders serving in the city. Primary areas of focus are: Community and Economic Development, Transcultural Relations and Peacemaking, and Congregational Development.
Those who have made a contribution to the field of urban ministry are given the opportunity to share their knowledge and wisdom with those who aspire to minister in the city. "Community Scholars," selected through an application process, are recognized for their work independent of academic credentials.
Select clergy are offered "executive level" training in areas that enhance their ability not only to lead a church but to be a leader in the larger community. Through special retreat seminars, clergy have an opportunity to enrich or refresh their skills, gain new insights into a critical concern, and provide practical, state-of-the-art resources for effective public leadership. Retreats include training by professional leaders in areas such as media/public relations, policy analysis, editorial writing, etc.
The Claremont School of Theology has long shared its wealth of information and expertise to help community organizations bridge the gap between their developing needs and available resources. The Urban Leadership Institute also helps organizations and individuals establish and bring to viability relevant community ministry programs by facilitating communication between start-up programs and those who offer needed resources, such as funding, management consultation, and volunteer staffing.
The Institute also initiates research to develop additional information and materials to assist church leadership.
The Institute sponsors or co-sponsors seminars, one-day convocations and conferences on issues relating to the city and ministry.
Staff and network personnel provide consultative services and assist individuals, mission groups, churches, judicatory leadership and other non-profit organizations in starting or strengthening their respective urban programs or ministries.
